You trade cryptos on crypto exchanges, directly or through a broker. Unlike stock exchanges with fixed , they run around the clock, including weekends and holidays. There is no closing bell: at many exchanges the daily candle simply ends at midnight UTC. Each exchange has its own list of buy and sell orders, so prices differ slightly between exchanges.
What around the clock means
News on Saturday moves a crypto price at once. On an exchange with fixed trading hours like the model exchange, a stock can only react at the next open, often with a . Crypto hardly has weekend gaps, but no pause either: a stop can be hit at three in the morning. The exercise’s model exchange trades from 9:00 to 17:30, Monday to Friday – 42.5 of 168 hours, about 25% of the week.
Comparing prices and candles
A chart always shows the prices of one particular exchange. In calm times they are close together, in hectic phases further apart. If you compare symbols, use candles from the same exchange and the same time zone – otherwise you compare different day boundaries.
More candles per year
Because crypto also trades at weekends, a crypto has about 365 daily candles a year, a stock about 252. A time limit of 756 daily candles therefore lasts about 3 years for stocks and about 2 for crypto. Our rule now calculates on : for stocks two per trading day (1,512 candles, about 3 years), for cryptos six per day (4,536 candles, about 2 years).
